Mattia Carfagna
Auvergne, France

Mattia Carfagna is the son of Francesco Carfagna, best known for his Altura domaine on the Tuscan island of Giglio. After leaving the island and working as a chef in Paris, Mattia has since settled down in the Auvergne, and farms a small parcel of Gamay d’Auvergne (Le Serail). As it is incredibly difficult to find vines in the Auvergne these days, Mattia has also purchased a parcel in the Herault, farming Grenache, Viognier, and a little bit of Muscat a Petits Grains. Coming from such a legendary domaine in Italy, Carfagna has a preternatural touch, and his decision to make wine in the Auvergne shows something about his rustic character as well. These are wines both rough and polished, bucolic and sauvage all at once.
