Ca Boit Libre
Damien Bastien Goddard
(Savoie, France)
Damien Bastien Goddard’s wines never present themselves in any obvious fashion upon first taste. But tuck them away for some time, forget about them, and revisit, and things consistently seem to change in bottle in some sort of alchemical fashion. While formerly working almost exclusively with the underrated table varietal Chasselas, Goddard moved from his original cellar and ramped up production in 2020, adding grapes such as Jacquere, Altesse, Gamay, Mondeuse, and Pinot Noir to his already striking portfolio of wines. While the Chasselas’ present themselves as fresh alpine spring water, the Altesse adds subtle layers of complexity and spice, and Ton Rouge Lac, our first taste of his alpine Pinot, is a refreshing take on the noble grape—the cold ferment is felt along with a surprising but welcome tannic grip that belies its beautifullly glowing shade of cloudy light red.
