Martin Wörner &
Alanna LaGamba
Marto
(Rheinhessen, Germany)

The new vintage of Martin and Alanna’s wines are now in stock. North stars of the fledgling west German naturwein scene, Martin and Alanna continue to produce wines of high calibers that buck any sort of preconceptions of what wine from this area is supposed to taste like. Increasingly influenced by their Alsatian neighbors, and in particular the cousins Bruno Schueller and J-F Ginglinger, Martin and Alanna’s bottles transcend all avant-garde thoughts and methods that their wines materialize from, and become wines for the table that almost anyone can enjoy—from the deepest heads to family who rarely drink, I’ve only ever witnessed joyous reactions to these special bottles that disappear a little bit too quickly both from the market and on the palate. 2021 is a particularly special Marto vintage for me, as I spent a week in late September of that year helping the crew out in what seemed a harvest with no end, with grapes being picked into late October. According to Martin, 2021 was a confusing weather year in the Rheinhessen, with no clear through line, but from chaos comes love sometimes, and here we are, treated to yet another round of distinguished and energetic wines from a young couple hell bent on delivering the goods sans pretension every single year.
