Jean Maupertuis
Auvergne, France

Jean Maupertuis has been quietly making sans-soufre wine long before you or me or any of our friends began to care about it. A quiet founding member of the Auvergnat Domaine de Peyra trio which folded in 2006, and whose bottles continue to carry a—rightfully so—insane amount of lore, Maupertuis is the only one from the crew who continues to make wine in the Auvergne. Working discreetly under his own name, and in the same village as Patrick Bouju, Jean’s unpretentious wines have always been favorites of true cavistes and somms, and highlight what’s just so special about this central region made up of outsider growers—peppery Gamay d’Auvergnes and lush Pinot Noirs sans artifice, subtle pet-nats and rosés that transport musically to older times.
