Yannick Meckert
Alsace, France

Subtle as it may be, I find Yannick Meckert’s decision to bottle his wine in Burgundy shaped glass instead of the classic Alsatian saber punk. And with the Galimard Editions flip label also? Who the fuck is this guy? And then this poetic statement on the back label too?
Imperfection is salt to beauty.
I try to capture the energy, the elevation, the will of a place.
To summarize its essence for easy reading, to approach the yin and the yang, the terrestrial and the cosmic, the soul of a wine.
To describe this wine through reason would extinguish it instead of feeling and drawing from its electrons.
Yannick is one of the more exciting figures to emerge out of Alsace over the past few years, completely rejecting the dogma against natural wine instilled in him by his father to go his own route. And if his wines, already delicious, showed promise before, these selections from 2023 seal the deal, especially Cris et Chuchotements—one of the best examples of macerated Pinot Gris out there currently, a completely finessed skin fermented wine that drinks more energetic light red than white, and will feel familiar to anyone who drinks the wines of Gerard Schueller et fils.
