Those that pay close attention already know that 2021 was a bit of a disastrous year in terms of yields for a lot of growers in France, but while quantities were low, quality of juice for the adept winemakers who adapted to conditions has been extremely high, and especially for red wines. Like many producers in 2021, Jean-Michel Stephan made only one estate wine, a blend of all parcels, but the result is something extraordinary that couldn’t have come from any other vintage—l’Ultime is a very special cuvée that is already completely striking in its youth, but will also no doubt blossom into something even more profound with some age.
