Benoit Kilian, a free jazz drummer and former wine dealer, has recently taken on a humble two hectares of vines in the Cote De Saone, a little known Burgundian appellation in the north. While accordingly, Benoit makes a tiny amount of wine, the work of his that I have experienced this year has already left a large mark. These are not Burgundian showstoppers but, rather, bottles of a humble and subtle beauty that showcase a farmer's deft hand in the vines and a spirit highly attuned to what actually ends up in the glass. To me, mouthfeel is everything in these wines; silky and velvety, and while the nuance of the juice may fly over the tongues of some young palates, I find these bottles addictive in their lessons of gentle restraint and true purity of fruit.
