Sylvain Messager is a low key and humble artist and musician whom recently, after a five year stint working for Etienne Thiebaud’s Domaine des Cavarodes has gone on his own. Farming just over one hectare of vines of Pinot Noir, Gamay, Poulsard, Savagnin, as well as a few hybrids, Messager’s wines feel aligned with the ethos of his previous master, but with their own rustic personality that show a more paysan side to the Jurassien north. When we asked Sylvain about purchasing some bottles after our first encounter with him back in early Spring, Messager replied that he was mostly making wines for his family and friends, and for a few choice accounts in the area. With a bit more coaxing we are glad to say that we are now his first importer. After a few micro millesimes, Messager is just getting started and we are more than fortunate to be able to witness firsthand where he goes next.
