Alexandre Guillaume, who previously studied anthropology before discovering natural wine, is a young and discreet vigneron whose cellar and vines are located at the nether regions of where both Anjou and Saumur meet. Guillaume worked for legendary father and son Mark and Martial Angeli (La Ferme de la Sansonnière), Antoine Foucault, and Didier Chaffardon before going on his own, and his first vintage in 2022 of both Chenin Blanc and Grolleau comes from parcels leased by the Angelis. From 2023 Guillaume has also taken on his own vines of these same cépages plus Cabernet Franc. Guillaume does everything manually in an impressive Troglodyte cellar, and his touch in the cave is extremely light. There is an organic hand at play here, a style that perfectly synthesizes his both classical and free form inspirations, as well as heaps of patience; all wines rest in barrel at least two years before bottling, and the results are superb—Grolleau with a depth and profondity hardly felt for the grape, and mineral saline Chenins that remind more of the South of Jura than Anjou with a salivating and sharp Savagnin-like acidic touch. A fresh discovery for us, we are very fortunate to be working with an up and coming talent like Alexandre.

After spending time with Robles, it’s easy to understand why—hIs wines are mûre yet lithe, and full of a giving and youthful energy just like Antoine himself. A native of Doubs, Robles worked for Antoine Lienhardt in Burgundy before installing his own domaine in Mantry, about 20 minutes south of Arbois. It’s here in a very unexpected industrial cellar and domicile where Robles takes his Bourgogne pedigree and turns it into something much more relevant, alive and robust; a vision of the Jura that stays rooted and yet looks to the future in excitingly improvised ways. Antoine grows Savagnin, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Poulsard and Trousseau in the Clos des Vallières, a 3.5 hectare clos that produces wines with grand potential, and yet with Antoine’s cellar hand and young vigor, the results are bottles that feel completely unpretentious. These are joyous wines and a stark contrast to the many self-serious bottles one can easily find elsewhere in the Jura. Anyone reading this probably already knows it, but Antoine is one to watch, and to drink... if you can find a bottle.

From a tip by Pierre Groger, we discovered the beautiful wines of Célia Imméle, a young vigneronne of a new Alsacienne guard based in the village of Sigolsheim. A good friend of both Lambert Spielmann and Eric Kamm, Célia worked nine years for the more traditionalist Alain Kuehn, who at one point gave her the opportunity to set up her own domaine from organically farmed vines that haven’t been plowed in over seven years. In her two hectares across numerous parcels, Imméle grows Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Auxerrois, Riesling, and Gewürztraminer on marl-limestone, clay-limestone, and granitic soils. While open to non-traditional blends of both macerated and pressed juices, Célia also makes her own takes of a Grand Cru Riesling from Schlossberg, and a delicately perfumed Pinot Noir, the later a totally stunning drink. We were blown away by her 2024 vintage—her first ever—and asked immediately if she’d be open to exporting her wines. From our first sniffs and sips, her creative touch in the cellar and beautiful sense of aromatics were beyond evident.About her work, Célia says it best (translated): “Wine has always been a part of my life, from bottles shared at family meals and village festivals to evenings with friends. I've always been close to nature; evenings spent hiking, camping in the forest, foraging for mushrooms and medicinal plants. When, through my experiences and encounters, I discovered wines made without additives, it was a revelation. Wine is the product of fermented fruit—grapes—and alcohol is the transformation of the fruit's sugar by yeast. My job is to produce beautiful fruit, prevent harmful bacteria in the cellar, bottle the wine, and share it with friends :).”

Just 20 minutes down the hill from the Auberge de Chassignolles—a short distance between any two locations in Auvergne—lies Pressat, one of hundreds of little hamlets that dot the lushly green pastoral surroundings of the heartland of France. Pressat is where Hannah Fuellenkemper keeps her cellar; a hard-edged bunker space where after the chaos of transporting grapes from elsewhere in the Auvergne, the Herault, the Ardeche, and sometimes even further afloat subsides, the fruit comes to macerate, to be pressed, to mix, and to eventually sit still and rest. Hannah, who shows zero reticence at being classified as a négociante, is adamant about not wanting to be a full-time farmer. For her, the setup here in Pressat is more than enough, and since taking over a plot in Boudes that formerly belonged to Aurélien Lefort, time is as short as ever. To taste with Hannah at her cellar is to open one’s palate and mind to the possibilities of mixage—not only in terms of varietal, but also in respect to person and place. A Cinsault from the storied Gerald Oustric could potentially get mixed with a Viognier from Mattia Carfagna’s holdings in the Herault, or a directly pressed Muscat passes through Gamay d’Auvergne skins, and once ingested, everything starts to make sense. Fuellenkemper’s drinks are hommages, but also juices that point to something new, true, and universal—everything and nothing matter all the same after tasting. Hannah’s wines showcase a true talent in vinification and resourcefulness, and her bottles are both unexpected and simply fun to drink—the old spirit of the Auvergne from and for a new generation of drinkers willing to look beyond the veil.

Lisa Le Postec is an Auvergnat from Clermont-Ferrand, whom besides spending time in places like New Zealand and California learning the ropes of winemaking and viticulture, worked as a wine agent in Paris under Fleur Godart, and two years under the guidance of another Auvergnat, Patrick Bouju. It was under Bouju that Lisa found the inspiration to begin her own winemaking activity, and after two years of running a négociant project with her partner Paul Aublet called L’eau Qui Dort, she launched her own domaine in Issoire, central Auvergne in 2023. Lisa grows Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Gamay du Beaujolais and Gamay d’Auvergne on her own estate, and in 2025 she also purchased fruit from a couple of old-school growers in Auvergne after a rough 2024 growing season in which she made only one wine, the sublime La Barberie. In her Basaltic vineyard and the cellar, Lisa—who is also an oenologist—is exacting, and her uncompromising nature comes out in her beautifully gourmet wines that present another essential piece of the ever-changing Auvergne puzzle.

Pierre Groger, a native of Colmar, spends his days working for the quixotic Bruno Schueller, and his evenings in his own vines just below the lieu-dit Bildstoecklé, known for its limestone rich terroir. Pierre holds just three ares (0.3 hectares) cumulatively of Riesling, Gewurztraminer, and Pinot Noir, and there are a few vines of Chasselas, Savagnin, and Sangiovese as well that go into the whites and reds, respectively. The project is refreshingly straightforward, just like Pierre himself: the Riesling is pressed directly, and the Gewurztraminer and Pinot Noir are both macerated in whole bunches. Whereas Schueller is known to pick last in the area and to eschew sorting in favor of a more botrytised feel, Pierre picks relatively early in comparison, favoring a maturity that hits before botrytis. Having such a small amount of vines, Groger is dedicated to sorting and vinifying with only the best grapes possible, ones he’d actually like to eat, himself. Neither wood nor ouillage are used in the vinification, in favor of sandstone jars and cuves in various forms without topping. The resulting wines feel paradoxical; lush aromatics give way to bone dry mouth feels that are taut, cerebral and heady, delicate, open and smooth all at once. Groger’s bottles are much more than a contrasting take to the extremes of his boss. These are special wines with a personality all their own that highlight the unique limestone laden soils of the south of Alsace, and we are very fortunate to be able to offer even a small amount of Pierre’s truly hands-on work.

RLK, or Richard, Laurent, and Joan Kien is a trio of three friends who met in construction school in Grenoble. Located in Saint Andéol de Berg, Joan is at the helm of the domaine, and the man on the ground. Since 2022 they have been buying fruit from close contacts in the Ardeche, Limoux, and the Gard. Since 2025 they have their own vineyards of Syrah and Grenache Blanc. Despite the multiple sources in the domaine’s nascent stages, their resourceful work has always felt of the spirit of the Ardeche. RLK’s wines surprise me with just how drinkable they are in this classic Ardechois sense, and yet they don’t feel old school at all—quite the contrary. And while Joan and co. do everything through a real lens of purity, I find it is the trio’s loose ties to the contemporary art and architecture worlds that bring these wines to the forefront of something new happening in the Ardeche, like an unexpectedly fresh southern gust of wind in the glass. A backbone of humor runs through both the cuvée names and the visual aesthetics of their labels (a whole cluster being psychoanalyzed on a couch)—some of which are from esteemed artist friends of theirs—and their wines, which are unbelievably sturdy, feel both grounded and free; that classic vin nature contradiction that we can’t get enough of.

Romain Lançon’s name seemed to come out of nowhere. In late 2025 I was forwarded images by multiple wine nerds of a discreet looking bottle in a rare post by Alexandre Jouveaux of Romain’s Les Farbottes 2023, asking if I knew anything about it. I didn’t at the time, but I was fortuitous enough to have found a couple of bottles not long after on a perfectly timed trip to France. I mean, even in France these are hard to come by. Upon returning home to Los Angeles, a bottle was uncapped and what was inside was an absolutely beautiful and deep red wine, profound and full of anise and spiced red fruits, the perfect volatile lift. I got in touch shortly thereafter.
Romain spent time working for Alexandre Jouveaux and Maryse Chatelin, and soon after he and his partner found their footing not too far from Uchizy in Jalogny, an area historically significant for its deep ties to the influential Cluny Abbey, and specifically an agricultural hub for the monks. It is here that the Lançons farm Gamay, Pinot Noir, and Chardonnay. Passing through this remote part of Burgundy, one feels a sense of quiet mystery and intrigue, of deeply rooted history far from the daily rumblings of the conventional Chardonnay makers in the Mâcon. This enigma is also felt in the glass. Even at 14.5% in 2023 there is a softness and lightness that pulls the drinker in for more with each sip of Lançon’s juice. We drank it in the middle of the afternoon with nary a sip of water, high as hell after and simply wanting more.

At the turn of the century, Peyra, which also consisted of Jean Maupertuis and Eric Garnier, paved the way for the cadre of free thinking auteur-esque vignerons that we now associate with the Auvergne, as well as natural winemakers at large. Emblematic of the sorts of wines we take for granted these days, the Peyra trio was ahead of their time, and most palates in the late 90s and early 2000s simply couldn’t understand what their wine was about. At some point after Peyra folded, Stephane and his wife Valérie left Clermont-Ferrand for Sens, a small city in Bourgogne-Franche-Comté in search of something more enriching, something they could call their own. They opened a humble restaurant called Mauvaises Herbes, named after the Peyra cuvée (IYKYK) which they still run today. In 2022 the pair began to buy fruit from a couple of friends in the Beaujolais (Pizay) and Ardeche (Rosières). They check in on the vineyards as often as possible, and harvest all of the fruit themselves. Like Peyra, cellar work is simple and old school; semi-carbonic macerations for the reds, and direct presses for the whites. All wines see eight to twelve months in barriques, and the results are highly drinkable wines that sing of each vintage; lifted aromatics and purity of fruit, dashes of volatility and with just the right salty mineral touch. After all of these years Stéphane—an early master—still has the touch.
