(Bugey, France)

2021 is the first vintage from Chloé Bey and Jordan d’Osualdo, whom after meeting during the harvest at Bruno Schueller in 2018, and then after a stint at Denis Montanar in Friuli, decided to settle down and purchase vines in the Bugey, increasingly a region of young upstarts. Historically, the Bugey has been misunderstood as connected to both Savoie and the Jura, but with much less cache and identity of its own. Thanks to north stars such as Francois Grinand, and now Antoine Couly, many younger guard winemakers are setting up shop here, in a zone where tradition feels a bit more free form, and land actually affordable. Chloe and Jordan’s wines have everything that we love about the Bugey—both lightness and depth, and a certain free form mineral energy that flows from glass to mouth. Working with mostly Gamay and Chardonnay, and with a bit of Mondeuse and Pinot Noir as well, this is an extremely impressive introduction of things to come.
