Manon
Monique Millton & Tim Webber (Forest Range, Australia)
Manon is the duo of Monique Millton, of New Zealand’s early biodynamic pioneers Millton Winery, and Tim Webber, a renowned chef from Sydney. A sort of oddity in the realm of Australian wine, Manon makes the entirety of their wines from their own estate grapes, from a gorgeous and shaded property way up in the Adelaide Hills, and just down the road from the legendary Anton Van Klopper and his Lucy M domaine. There is something so artful and honest about Monique and Tim’s wines, and since first tasting them at a Melbourne wine bar, and shortly visiting thereafter in 2018, I have been completely hooked.

Enjoying apéro at Manon farm with Monique, Anton Van Klopper, and friends (2018)
Monique and Tim’s wines are exercises in restraint and nuance, but the pair are also completely unafraid of aspects like sugar and volatility when in balance, letting the wines dictate their readiness for release over keeping to some sort of commercial timeline. Because of this, we don’t see these wines too often in Los Angeles, and even less so these days as for the past couple of vintages, Manon have lost a large amount of fruit to the native kangaroos that run wild on their farm and in the area. As cute as this may sound, it has become a real issue for them, and the duo are seeking ways to coexist with the native keepers of the land, all while forging ahead with their biodiverse farming and winemaking.
