Le Picatier
Sortie de Cave 2012
Gamay
Cotes Roannaise, France
A 2012 library release from Le Picatier, the project of Christophe and Géraldine Pialoux, who work in the little known Cotes Roannaise, an area sandwiched between the Beaujolais and the city of Clermont-Ferrand in the Auvergne. Christophe and Géraldine have notoriously suffered an extreme amount of difficult vintages, yet they somehow keep making fascinating wines for the heads, like this cellar release of Gamay from 2012, a year in which hail reigned supreme. The wine was bottled that year and then kept in their cave until now. It is a delicately structured Gamay that recalls Auvergne more than Beaujolais or the Loire, with an extremely intoxicating nose that reminds me of anonymous red wine filled apéros and fun filled evenings at Paris’ Chambre Noire years ago.
