Le Mazel
Ardeche, France

If there is one domaine that typifies the spirit of the Ardeche, the siblings Gerald and Jocelyn Oustric’s Le Mazel is it. Since 1997 Le Mazel has become a thing of humble legend, and a place for other vignerons seeking influence to convene and to purchase grapes; most famously Le Mazel is a provider of grapes to many cuvées of Anders Frederik Steen. The Oustric’s formula is simple—a slow harvest with picks only in the mornings, carbonic macerations for the reds, and slow presses for the whites. There is beauty and tension in these bottles, and a paysan essence that makes even the most jaded drinker out there forget about prices on the current market. As Gerald only releases when ready, these specific bottlings (the most released ever in LA at one time!) are already at places of outsanding quality. Sunkissed but light and vibrant, these will no doubt be on our table for the rest of the summer.
